NAB Auskick Gala day’s a huge success

This year the Claremont district held two separate NAB Auskick Gala days; One at City Beach Oval for all Pre - Primary, Year 1 and Year 2 kids and the other at Charles Riley for our Year 3’s who this year player in their own informal competition.

Both Gala Days were a huge success with 97 teams and just over 1000 kids competing at City Beach Oval and 24 teams and 360 competing at Charles Riley Reserve.

The kids had a wonderful time and it is great to give them the opportunity to showcase all their skills they have learnt from their coaches throughout the year. It also gives them the opportunity to play games against new kids from other clubs which is great experience for the coming years when they progress onto modified and youth football.

Credit must go to both the West Coast Junior Football Club for their work organising the Gala Day for all our Pre – Primary, Year 1 and Year 2 kids and the North Beach junior Football Club for organising the Year 3 Gala Day.

It is a great way to finish off the Auskick season and to all those volunteers who contributed this year with the Auskick program well done!

NEW AMATEUR COACHES APPOINTED FOR 2011

With Tristen Walker's recent appointment as head coach, 2011 is looking promising for the West Coast Cowan Amateur Football Club.

Tristen Walker brings a wealth of experience from his involvement in the football world; from his time as a player under Mick Malthouse at the Collingwood Football Club, to his previous involvement as an Assistant Coach at West Coast Cowan in 2008.

Following this internship at the club, Walker spent the last two years involved in implementing sporting and AFL programs with the indigenous community in the North of Australia.

"We've hired the best football coach we could," said Isaak Dury, West Coast Cowan AFC President. "He has very recent experience at the highest level, but also understands the pressures that amateur football clubs have. He understands the complete club philosophy that we are building at West Coast Cowan. His ability to communicate and his level of enthusiasm is tremendously positive. He's a perfect fit for what we're trying to accomplish here."

'REC FOOTY' SEASON REVIEW

This season the Claremont District ran Recreational Football competitions on Wednesday and Thursday nights, with nine teams and six teams respectively. Overall between 150 and 200 players took to the field over the two months and it was great to see such involvement and participation in this modified version of Australia’s greatest game.

Recreational Football is a non-contact, all inclusive modification of AFL football and gives people of all ages and genders the chance to participate in football in a fun and social environment. As it is run during the AFL off-season, it is a great way to keep fit, keep involved in the game and just to just kick the footy with family and friends.

The season kicked off on Wednesday 27th October, with a lot of familiar faces and a few newbies pulling on the boots. The Wednesday social competition ran over nine weeks and was conducted in a league format. This meant there were no finals and the team on top took out the shield.

“Pearced as Farts” took out the Wednesday competition, finishing the season undefeated (8 wins, 1 bye, 0 losses), with a ‘for and against’ of 207%. They were captained strongly by University AFC President Peter Toll and with the help of West Coast Eagles Premiership midfielder Drew Banfield they proved to be the dominant side all season. “Fat n Slow”, lead by Claremont FC Development Officer Sam Cousens, finished in an honourable second place having only lost to the top team. “Pearced as Farts” may have won the shield, but there were plenty of other awards which were given out to the other participants for sportsmanship and attitude, which is what Recreational Football is all about. “Subi Oldies” and “12’s Dreaming Team” both had a hard time on the scoreboard throughout the season, but week in week out they turned up with big grins, positive attitudes and were always ready to have a good time. Their attitudes to the game made it enjoyable for all the teams to play against them and lifted the spirits of everyone involved. Due to this, Claremont FC CEO Todd Shimmon donated 10 Claremont Tigers memberships to both of those teams for 2011.

The Thursday competition ran over eight weeks and as there were fewer teams than on the Wednesday nights, they played off in a three week finals series. The teams that were knocked out of the finals still played the following weeks in friendly matches against the other eliminated sides.

The participants in the Thursday competition were more experienced than the Wednesday crowd, with a lot having a footy background including Claremont FC and West Coast Cowan AFC both fielding a couple of sides. Although the skill level was reasonably high, the teams involved played for fun and in great

sportsmanship, sharing players between sides when teams struggled for numbers. Eventually after the mini-season and finals series it came down to the Grand Final between both West Coast sides, “Honour String” and “Young Bux”. Having gone through undefeated in the mini-season and finishing on top of the ladder, “Honour String” deservingly took home the cup with a 24 point win. Lee Stringer and Chrissie Mavros led the side and backed up their winning season from the previous year.

After each of the final rounds everyone stayed back for a free sausage sizzle and to sink a few cold beverages with their team mates and opposing sides. At times during the season the competitions got quite intense as happens in all sports, but overall were played in great Spirit. Everyone shared the ball around and endeavoured to get everyone involved. After the success of the 2010 competitions, the Claremont District is looking to further expand the Recreational Football program in 2011.

AUTISTIC AUSKICK PROGRAM IN REVIEW

The Claremont District in conjunction with the West Australian Football Commission launched a new NAB AFL Auskick pilot program for children with Autism at Claremont Oval in November with over 60 participants signing up to join in the fun.

The program ran for 8 weeks with the first 4 weeks seeing the kids focus on the fundamental skills of our game through some basic skill drills and fun games.

Weeks 5 - 7 saw the kids playing official games of NAB AFL Auskick which was a huge achievement given that lots of these kids wouldn’t have experienced physical contact or competition before.

On the last week the kids were treated to a fun day where they got the opportunity to tour the Claremont Football Club and meet the players and coaching staff. This day was topped off with a sausage sizzle and short presentation where each participant received a certificate.

The kids were split into 5 groups depending on their age and were each assigned a Football Development Staff to coach them over the 8 weeks. A special mention must go to Lou McKenry (South Fremantle), Anthony Balcombe (Perth) and Sarah Fisher (Swan Districts) who assisted the Claremont Development Staff Dan Barnes, Tamer Mol and Sam Cousens to help facilitate the program.

The program would not have worked as smoothly if it wasn’t for the involvement of the Curtin University Paediatric students who formed a great partnership with the development staff to help deliver these fun packed sessions.

For children with Autism, the benefits of participating in a team sport are enormous. However this means overcoming many fears and behavioural patterns, to learn to work as part of a team.

Football in particular leads children to understand and deal with unexpected physical contact, while also improving physical skills and fitness and most importantly, it provides a wonderful social environment from early childhood through to adult life.

The long term goal is to support the children and help them engage in playing football, whether it is at home, at school or as part of the general NAB AFL Auskick program, and later with local football teams.

The Claremont District looks forward to running the program again next year and well into the future.

AUSKICK GALA DAY A WINNER

On Sunday 15th August with the sun piercing through a light cloud cover, 103 teams comprising of 1700 little Auskickers converged onto a picturesque City Beach Oval to take part in the 2010 NAB Auskick Gala Day.

All 13 clubs from our district were represented and the day was deemed a huge success from everybody involved with nothing but glowing feedback from the players, coaches, parents and the Claremont Football Club (CFC). Every volunteer involved on the day including the umpires, coaches and parents followed the Auskick policy to the letter and ensured the players were treated to a positive environment to demonstrate all their skills they had learnt throughout the season.

Each of the games were umpired by players from the CFC and the players should be extremely proud with the way they conducted themselves showing great enthusiasm, energy and willingness to not only umpire but coach the kids and pass on some invaluable advice.

Claremont captain and former Wembley Downs JFC player, Clancy Rudeforth said “The day is extremely important for our playing squad as it’s one of the great chances we get to give a little bit back to the juniors in our district and grass roots football. It wasn’t long ago that we were Auskickers our self and I still remember and cherish the involvement the Claremont Football Club used to have with my junior footy club all those years ago.”

The day obviously couldn’t have gone ahead without the Gala Day committee of the West Coast JFC (WCJFC) who did a fantastic job organising the whole event. A huge thank you must go to everyone involved in the preparation and your efforts were deeply appreciated by everyone involved in the day. I would also like to thank the CFC but especially the players for their fantastic contribution and their efforts certainly did not go unnoticed. Well done boys!!!

The Claremont District looks forward to working in conjunction with the WCJFC again next year as we plan to make the day even bigger and better.

CLAREMONT TIGERS HEAD BACK TO THEIR ROOTS

On Wednesday the Claremont Tigers will return to coach their original junior clubs. The Tigers were hoping to encourage kids to participate in healthy activities, such as Footy. The players, almost 100 of them, all helped kids learn the basics and tools that the successful WAFL players have used to build their own careers.

The Claremont league side has had an outstanding start to the season with a record of nine wins one loss, find that it is a great time to spread their knowledge of the sport with their own junior communities, for it is those junior communities that contribute so much to the Claremont team. According to Todd Shimmon, the Chief Executive Officer, about 86% of the Tiger’s come from their country and metro junior clubs.

Because of this Claremont being a club that is firmly devoted to their youth, using about a third of their staff for community and talent development. The Claremont Tigers commitment shows in their winning records, having their League and Reserve teams both ranked first with their Colts holding on strongly in the second spot.

The Tigers have confidence in the power of the sport and the use of recreational activity to help keep kids away from dangerous social issues such as violence or drugs. The club believes that team sports, such as Footy, can be a major contributor to keeping kids away from harmful behavior, along with teaching valuable life lessons such as cooperation and fairness.

“The strategy behind the Claremont Football Club players in returning to their junior clubs is to highlight the connection between the WAFL club and their junior community clubs,” said Dan Barnes, the district manager, “Additionally it is the players opportunity to recognize the positive contribution the junior club has made to their development both as a player and a person.”

NAB Auskick
