NAIDOC Round at Wembley Downs JFC

Tuesday, August 29, 2017 - 2:42 PM

National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) week celebrations are held annually across Australia to celebrate the heritage, achievements and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC Round is a round we can celebrate our country's Indigenous culture and players that have shaped Australia's Game. A game that unites us all, players and fans, standing strong and proud for the past, present and future generations.

WDJFC was very proud to be the host club of this extremely special event on Sunday July 23.  Even though the weather wasn’t very kind to us the importance of such an even still shone through.

A very special indigenous smoking ceremony took place by Dooram Aboriginal Advisory Group plus dancing and didgeridoo playing.  This was followed on by two Club derbies between Year 9 and then Year 10 to finish off the day.

Commerative Naidoc footies were given away and together with lots of fun stuff from Claremont District including the bouncy castles and free footies and posters it was a terrific afternoon.

Special thanks to our sponsors Claremont District, Barbagello and Abel McGrath together with the fantastic centre circle painting by Mark Your Turf, great aerial shots by Osborne Park Drones and terrific action shots by Mike O’Brien.

Our amazing indigenous jumpers wouldn’t have been possible either without the incredible support that the Club received from Hale and Churchlands Senior High School.

Adam Cockie and Declan Cormack from WAFC and CFC respectively also deserve a special mention for helping to bring the day to fruition and spending their Sunday at the Club to assist.
